How about touring a shabby chick cottage in England today? Phil and Philippa Heath moved to this three-bedroom cottage in the Derbyshire countryside, on the edges of the Peak District, in the early 1990s. The property was built around 200 years ago. It had been rented out as a gamekeeper’s cottage for a long while, and been neglected for many years; it was dark and damp and there were even mushrooms growing on the walls. So, little by little they restored every room. The furniture was picked up from all manner of places, including reclamation yards and house sales. The Heaths also gratefully accepted hand-me-downs from friends and family, while some items were even rescued from skips. An overall feminine, shabby chick style cottage with lots of floral prints and little hearts in almost every room.

This 1860 Cotswold stone cottage in Oxfordshire was voted Best Cottage in magazine Period Living Readers’ Awards 2010.

Today, we are going to Australia to visit Alice Barker and her husband Daniel's cottage, built around 1910 and located in Ballarat, Australia’s largest inland city.

Ceramics they bought in Morocco, Turkey and Thailand can be seen displayed in many of the rooms. Blue-and-white china jars and bowls are grouped on a hall table and on the kitchen mantel, while the dining room dresser displays floral patterned teacups and colourful Moroccan pottery. The fireplaces are original.

Alice and Daniel are both keen photographers. In the sitting room, vintage black-and-white photographs share the walls with images from their travels. One of Alice’s treasures, an old Kodak Brownie camera, is displayed on the mantel beside reproduction copies of 1920s postcards from Egypt on a wire stand.
